SFERISTERIO OF MACERATA
Macerata is known all over the world thanks to its open air opera festival. This open air opera festival takes place every year in July and a vast international public is accommodated in the 5.000 seater Sferisterio. The Sferisterio is a neoclassical arena built in the 19th century according to the project of the architect Ireneo Aleandri. At the beginning the arena was used as a stadium for the “Palla al bracciale” (a play with the ball), horse-riding shows, jousts, circus and bingo. The Sferisterio was inaugurated in 1829 with two days long festivities.
