Lake Pilato is shaped like two lenses. It is the protagonist of charming popular legends. First of all the one which is connected to the Sibilla; according to her the lake was the Avernus and the gate of Hell.
Around 1200 A.D. Lake Pilato became famous and was the destination of necromancers and sorcerers.
It is said that Pilato, who was sentenced to death, was thrown in the lake whose waters churned ruddy.
During the year the waters become red but due to the fact that there is the Chirocephalus Marchesonii (a crustacean), which was discovered by Marchesoni.
