The sightseeing tour among the castles in Fermo’s district begins from Porto San Giorgio, that used to be the ancient harbor of Fermo, nowadays an important seaside resort, through the hills for about 40 km up to Montelparo.
Fermo was a Roman colony and its name was “Firmum Picenum”; it has a pyramidal plan dominated by the Roman-Gothic dome.
For centuries all the towns in the surrounding area were subjected to Fermo’s jurisdiction and its authority extended also to the seaside centers, down to San Benedetto del Tronto; Fermo was one of the major reference points of the Adriatic sea.
The medieval castles on hilltops are of ancient origins. The tour through the old towns of Magliano di Tenna, Grottazzolina, Montottone, Belmonte Piceno…up to Montelparo will let the visitors see an harmonious and attractive landscape, that has been shaped throughout the centuries of hard work.
