Pergola is a small city which is situated in the valley of Cesano. It has a lot of churches and elegant palaces. But above all, Pergola is famous for the “Bronzi Dorati” (Gilded Bronzes) that were buried in a field and discovered in pieces in 1946.
There are different theories about the “Bronzi” and about who they represent. According to the most popular one the “Bronzi” represent Livia (wife of the emperor Augustus and mother of Tiberius), Agrippina and her sons, Druso III and Nerone. Another theory states that the “Bronzi” represent a senatorial family.
For a very long time Pergola and Ancona have fought as they both wanted to have the “Bronzi” in their own museum. For the time being it has been decided that the “Bronzi” will spend part of the year in Pergola and the remaining time they will be exhibited in the “Museo Nazionale delle Marche” in Ancona.
