Public Library of Fermo, Sala del Mappamondo

The public library is located inside Palazzo degli Studi, it is the richest one of the Marche and it is among the first ten libraries in Italy. Its origins go back to 1511 but it was officially founded in 1688. This public library is very important due to the quantity and the quality of the books it was given during the years.
The old seat of the library is the “Sala del Mappamondo”, which is completely decorated with walnut wood and here there is the library’s core. The hall has this name because of the presence of a big globe (1712) made by Silvestro Moroncelli, a Venetian cartographer. The globe perfectly matches with the amazing wood ceiling rich in Baroque ornaments.
The library owns 128 manuscripts, more than 400.000 books, 686 “incunaboli”, 15.000 “Cinquecentine”, 6000 prints of famous authors and more than 2000 drawings.
