It was founded in 1142 according to the will of Guarniero II, duke of Spoleto, by 12 Cistercians coming from the Abbey of Chiaravalle in Milano.
It was built according to the instructions of San Bernardo, the building material was taken from the near Roman city “Urbs Salvia” and French architect-monks were chosen to build the abbey.
In a short time the abbey became so powerful that it expanded through its six farms and reached Numana.
The church has a nave and two aisles and it is huge: 72 m long, 20 m wide and 25 m high. You can see the cross vaults only by the entrance and by the presbytery, because the central part of the roof was destroyed in 1422. |
