::   The Story  ::

Back

The name Tolentino comes from the pre-latin root "tul" which means "border", probably referryng to the river Chienti. The town developped where there were once prehistoric and then "Piceni" populations. It was a Roman municipium and after barbaric raids the town rose as a free minicipality following a fortune of other "Marca" countries all under the papal domination. From the Midlle Ages Tolentino as still conserved in good condition part of the circuit of its walls, wich completely surrounded the urban centre with it fortifications and doors. The circuit was intact until a century ago, when after the opening of new streets and the building industry expansion, walls, doors and fortifications were pulled down. What we can see now belongs to the XIIIth - XIVth century. The communication with the right side of the Chienti could be possible throught the Devil Door and the Devil Bridge. The last one, built in 1268, is a powerful construction consisting of five arches, wich are very higt and a tower-barrier. Devil Bridge's name is similar to that of many bridges in Italy and in Europe; this comes from the audacy constraction and very similar legends. From here the caracteristic and the popular quarter of "Fondaccio" can be seen, it has a medioeval plan where the very ancient St. Mary's Church, rebuilt in the XIIIth century with a central plan, even if there are still some traces of the old construction, catches the eye. In 1797, in the rooms of Parisani Palace, the treaty between Napoleon Bonaparte and the Holy See was signed. In the neighborhood, near Rancia Castle, the battle between Austrian troops and Joachin Murat, King of Naples, who was unsuccessfully tring to unify Italy, was fought, in 1815.
